Extinction Rebellion Vancouver's 4-day Mayday action started with a bang. In total, a downtown Vancouver intersection was blocked for nearly seven hours by creative disruption efforts which included a large pink boat resting on a trailer with flattened tires.

We, the undersigned, unequivocally condemn the City of Vancouver’s 2021 budget, which allocates over $340 million in expenditures to the Vancouver Police Department (“VPD”). We demand that City Council immediately undertake the work to build a vision of Vancouver without police and cut the VPD budget by 50% in 2022. We further call on the Vancouver Police Board to heed its obligation under the Police Act,  to consider the priorities, goals, and objectives of the Council of the municipality, and develop an Operational Plan and Budget that commits to defunding, and a shift from enforcement and criminalization.

The Thorn aims to contribute to the collective work of digging for the truth and telling the stories of the city from the bottom up. We need sharp — sometimes even prickly — criticism in order to think clearly about making a better world. 

The pandemic has exposed more than ever that the status quo is rigged and produces inequality and exclusion. We need transformative change, and politics as usual won’t cut it.

There is a lot of commonality between group goals and aspirations and everyone expressed a desire to have more of these kinds of assemblies that amplify socialist demands and messaging.
