For Bernie in Bellingham

Spent yesterday afternoon canvassing for Bernie in Bellingham with some comrades and friends. And we met some other folks from Vancouver who had organized themselves to get down and help out too. Bellingham has some great political organizers and left organizations, including a tenants union and an active chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America. So it was no surprise to find what seems like a pretty finely-tuned local operation for Bernie.

At the burrito joint / bar afterward, we told the bartender what we’d been up to and he responded something like, “That’s great. I feel bad I haven’t been out volunteering. I’ve been giving a donation every week for the last six weeks.”

Bernie’s historic campaign and all the potential for transformation it carries has only made it as far as it has because of people like this chipping in whatever they can. More than any specific policy, it’s the possibility of mass participation by the working class and the power they could wield that explains the fear and hatred — including from much of the liberal wing of the political class — of Bernie and his campaign.

Fingers crossed for Washington State this Tuesday!
